MP meets our own Pupil Parliament

Pupils at Gorsey Bank were delighted to meet their local MP, Esther McVey, when she came into school last week.

The Conservative MP for Tatton came to visit Gorsey Bank in what was an exciting finish to UK Parliament Week, a national event to help teach children about parliament and democracy.

Our focus this year was on the environment, encouraging pupils to create work and take part in debates around climate change and how best to protect the future of the planet. We examined the outcomes of the G7 climate meeting in June and discussed COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, currently taking place in Glasgow.

All of our pupils were incredibly interested in the topic and came up with some fantastic ideas about how we can all help to look after the environment.

The week ended with a fascinating talk by Esther McVey. The children were then able to ask her questions about life as an MP, how parliament works and the importance of democracy.

Esther McVey MP said:

“It’s very important for children to be taught about politics at a young age. It teaches leadership skills, how to communicate and how to be tenacious in adversity.

“It was also great to see so many young people talking about big topics which will affect the future generations.”

We all really enjoyed UK Parliament Week, but our interest doesn’t end there! Gorsey Bank’s Pupil Parliament operates throughout the school year and consists of children across the school who are voted into ‘office’ to represent their classmates and friends. They have their say on a variety of issues, from children’s rights to which sports they’d like to see offered in school.
