Gorsey Bank pupils talk to large publishing house for World Book Day

Gorsey Bank Primary School pupils had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the process of publishing a book when they were visited by two large publishing houses.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils had a classroom visit from Tiny Tree Publishers, and i2i Publishing spoke to the whole school via Zoom about how books get published, the process it takes, and how they choose books to publish. Afterwards, the pupils were invited to ask questions to the publishing houses.

This visit came as part of our World Book Day celebrations, focused around the theme of empathy. Each class would look at books based around the topic and were then encouraged to write their own poems or text.

Alongside writing their own literature, the pupils focused on building their own classroom curriculum bookshelves. These bookshelves help pupils to expand their reading horizons and read across a variety of genres and themes. The best bookshelf has been displayed in the school library. Pupils were also able to spend vouchers at the local Waterstones.

Teachers and pupils were encouraged to bring their favourite books to school and dress up as a character from the book. Everyone took part in a “book chat”, where children from each year group buddied up with a peer from another year to share aspects of their favourite books.

Gorsey Bank’s World Book Day celebrations came to an end with a book fair and family reading evening. Everyone had hot chocolate and listened to readings of the school’s favourite children’s books.
